Loki, The Veiled Marksman

Designing Loki has been a struggle for quite some time. The challenge was breaking away from the highly influential designs already on the market to find a unique visual identity, while still keeping him recognizable to the general public. Because of this, I found myself really conflicted during the initial sketching phase.

Crafting his psychological profile wasn't too difficult: he leans into intellect and sophistry, masters shapeshifting, and embodies the typical—or perhaps atypical—rebelliousness of a second child.

I also decided early on to transfer his shapeshifting ability to his weapon, Lævateinn—a portable, foldable, high-energy sniper rifle. The only dilemma was whether it should primarily function as a folding cane or a folding sniper rifle.

The hardest part, I think, was his costume design. I incorporated a lot of playful, wealthy playboy elements—like a purple silk shirt, a subtly BDSM-inspired latex undersuit, and an ornate gold cummerbund or vest. At the same time, due to his role as a sniper, his outfit needed to retain elements of techwear, all while aiming for an asymmetrical design.

Overall, The foundation of this character is firmly rooted in my initial hand-drawn sketches. While I experimented with AI as a technical tool to explore color palettes and turnarounds, the core design logic and aesthetic intent were entirely hand-steered. AI currently functions as a supplementary tool that requires strict art direction; without proactive guidance, the results quickly devolve into generic, error-prone outputs. The defining vision always relies on human intent.
